Students turned fashion models from St. Joseph’s School put the bass in their step and strolled down the runway for spectators while sporting fashions from three area businesses March 23, all to raise money for the school’s upcoming Grade 7/8 trip to Waterloo.
Students from a variety of grades took part in the fundraising event in which Port Elgin’s Bicyclette Rouge Children’s Boutique and Casual Corners as well as Tara’s Brenda’s Bridal Boutique dressed models in styles suitable for everything from prom to a day in the rain. Trends in Southampton volunteered their time to style the models’ hair.
The elementary fashion event of the year was organized by St. Joseph’s teacher Mrs. Hewitt who said that anyone who wanted to be involved was welcome to participate. Students have been busy preparing for the event since February by selling tickets and going to fittings for the show. “The kids are ecstatic. The kids are really excited to... wear nice clothes and dresses and it’s a good self-esteem booster,” said Hewitt who added that the businesses involved were “happy and willing to be a part of the show”.
Amy Shute of Bicyclette Rouge was on hand along with her sister Rachel to help style their young models and said that they make it a priority to support the community as often as possible. “If it means that we can also showcase some of our quality products at the same time, it's a win/win,” said Shute.
Students sold 140 tickets at $10 each before the event. Grade 7/8 students also displayed artwork which sold by donation.
