War affects everyone. Music has stirred, distracted and consoled in every war. That is the message of “Songs of Hope and Belonging”, a unique event local musicians are bringing to the season of Remembrance.
The songs of Vera Lynn first made area vocal soloist and teacher Kelda Mikalson fall in love with the music of the era. “Their beautiful lines illustrate the community, hope and longing of the times,” she said.
The now annual event brings together both familiar and lesser known music and memories from all those affected by the World Wars: children, lovers, soldiers, women and entertainers.
“Our world is full of conflict; we want to teach a new generation about the importance of entertainment in lifting spirits,” she said, adding that it also brings people together even when torn apart by war.
Kelda, along with Pianist Bethany Matthews welcome Baritone George Hiemstra, who will be adding World War I songs into the program.
Following a pay-what-you-can show on November 6 at St. Thomas Anglican Church in Owen Sound, the performers will hit the stage on Saturday, November 12 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Southampton. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
