Comedians brought their acts to Saugeen Shores to be part of the Saugeen Shores Comedy Festival, now in its second year. The first night of comedy took place at Chester’s Bar & Grill Co. August 25. The “Thursday Night Mic” featured acts such as James Hammond, Ian Fergus, Paul Thompson, Blair Streeter, and Yuk Yuk’s performer, Cedric Newman.

Newman was happy to be a part of the Comedy Festival and is no stranger to Saugeen Shores as he spent time here last summer emceeing a friend’s wedding. He’s also travelled the shoreline performing standup in Kincardine and Goderich.

Newman credits his comedy bread and butter to observatory comedy. “I've been all across Canada, so I just make fun of places I’ve been to,” said Newman, who then gave anecdotes about a sign for a “black market” on the way to Saugeen Shores, where he hoped he would be able to get a deal on radishes, and also quipped about Port Elgin’s store Ralph’s Hi-Way Shopette, where he was impressed with the “one-stop shop”.

Comedian Ian Fergus returned to Saugeen Shores to be a part of the Comedy Festival. “I had a blast last year which is why I came back,” Fergus said before taking the stage. “It’s a fun atmosphere. Everyone here is relaxing and it’s just nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city where everyone seems stressed. Everyone here is set to have a good time.”

Fergus noted that the jokes that really landed with the crowds in Saugeen Shores were what he called the “blue humour” type, ones that boardered on indecency and had a set ready that he hoped would appease the crowd.

The laughter continued in Kincardine on Friday at Gilley’s Feed Lot and featured headliner, “That Canadian Guy” Glen Foster with the third and final night, “O Good Gala” featuring the best of the festival at Lakeshore Recreation in Port Elgin on Saturday.
