Grab the popcorn, and pour yourself a cup of ambition, as the Chantry Island Cham-bettes host the classic film 9 to 5, at the Port Elgin Cinemas on Thursday, March 21.

The comedy was released in theatres in 1980, starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton. Parton wrote and recorded the film’s theme song by the same name and it remains one of her biggest hits to date. Parton’s performance in the film earned her two Golden Globe nominations in 1981 and the theme song won her a Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance in 1982.

Money raised from the screening will go towards the Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey, as it has in previous years when the Cham-bettes hosted similar movie nights - Pillowtalk in 2015 and Grease in 2014.

Cham-bette Mary Ellen Renaud said the film, which centers around three women who challenge the status quo and turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical boss, played by Dabney Coleman, started a movement for women in the workplace. Those who attend are asked to bring “shower gifts”, gift cards, or other items such as pillows, blankets, batteries, that will be donated to the Women’s House.

When asked what people attending can expect Renaud said, “it’s optional to anyone to wear a costume, but many do, because it’s fun.”

Doors open at 6 p.m., with the film beginning at 7 p.m.
