The Northport Cougars know a thing or two about putting on a show, and their Art Show on March 31 was no exception.

Hundreds came to view the students’ artwork that lined the school’s hallways, from tin sculptures to mixed media. Even Epsom Salt winter landscapes could be seen.

The event was organized by grade 5/6 teacher Rebecca Woodley and her ME to WE group. Woodley explained that the group was selling, by donation, reused-items-turned-art-pieces, and that the whole school was eager to showoff their art projects.

“It’s neat to see the different grades, and sometimes you go, ‘Wow, that’s a grade 3/4 piece, it looks a lot older,’” said Woodley, adding that it’s nice to see the kids’ reaction, “like, ‘I did that last year,’ ‘Oh, I get to do this,’ and ‘I can’t wait to do that project next year,’ so it’s exciting for them.”

Once visitors made it through the halls of the school they happened upon the gym where refreshments were served and kids and parents had the opportunity to create a lasting memory with a special art project.

“We have a local artist Susan Seitz, and I thought it would be neat to have everyone contribute to making a painting so the whole school, parents, grandparents, kids and teachers are all going to put a few squares of paints on a canvas, and we’re painting a cougar because that’s our school mascot,” said Woodley.

Donations were collected by members of ME to WE to raise money for a fellow student and to help the San Miquel Girls Club in Ecuador, a Free the Children initiative.
