Gran Fondo Lake Huron returns to Saugeen Shores on August 15 bringing cyclists, volunteers and supporters together for a fundraiser in support of local health care. Organized by the Saugeen Shores Hospital Foundation, the annual event has grown into a well-known community ride.
Since the inaugural race in 2018, Gran Fondo Lake Huron has raised more than $2 million to help fund hospital equipment, technology and patient-care needs.
Organizers said the 2025 event drew more than 900 riders and raised over $430,000. Nearly 1,000 riders are expected to hit the road this year. The Foundation encourages participants to aim for at least $200 in fundraising per rider, however, there is no minimum requirement.
The event is designed to welcome a wide range of participants, from families and first-time riders to experienced cyclists looking for a longer challenge. Riders can take part individually or as part of a team.
All routes begin and end in Southampton and are designed to highlight the varied landscapes of the area, from farmland to shoreline.
The shorter rides are aimed at accessibility and community participation. The 10km route is promoted as a family-friendly option suitable for all ages and abilities, while the 30km route offers a manageable tour through countryside and along the Saugeen River. From there, riders can choose longer distances with built-in challenges like gravel and elevation, including stretches near MacGregor Point Provincial Park.
Rest stops and on-course support will be on-hand. Riders can enjoy a catered meal and beer garden post-ride. Fees are tiered by distance.
Approximately 100 volunteers are required to put on the event. Community members and businesses are also invited to become route sponsors.
