In response to community concerns and complaints, the Hanover Police Service is once again conducting a traffic initiative called Project Noisemaker to address aggressive driving and loud mufflers.

The campaign began on May 16 and will continue until September 7. Enforcement will be increased and aggressive drivers and vehicles with loud mufflers will be targeted by officers.

“Essentially, if your motor vehicle is causing others to turn their heads because of the noise levels or windows to rattle as you approach and pass, expect to get stopped by police,” says Hanover Police Chief Chris Knoll.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to fix any modified exhaust systems and refrain from using other devices that increase noise levels. Drivers found in violation are subject to charges under the Highway Traffic Act for offences such as Improper Muffler and Unnecessary Noise. These infractions carry set fines of $110 that could also lead to a court date for repeat and ongoing violators.

Chief Knoll went on to state “Ensuring safety on our roads is a fundamental responsibility of the Hanover Police Service and all police services across Ontario. Our officers are committed to ensuring the rules of the road are followed and that those found in violation are held to account.”

Although Project Noisemaker concludes in September, enforcement of these laws will continue. Chief Knoll emphasized that it is important for those with loud exhausts systems, no exhaust systems and modified exhaust systems to address these equipment issues.
