With only a few days before the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) event, United Way Bruce Grey (UWBG) is rallying support to hit their fundraising target and "help the hurt, the hungry, and the homeless in our area," says June Van Bastelaar, member of the organizing team.

The Southampton Rotary Club has partnered with United Way Bruce Grey once again and a $60,000 goal has been set. On February 28, CNOY walks are being held across Canada, however the funds raised are channeled by UWBC into local initiatives that can address one of their core priorities: "to support individuals and families who face the challenges of poverty. These efforts aim to create lasting change and offer hope for a brighter future."

"Last year we donated to the Family YMCA housing, Canadian Mental Health Grey Bruce and local food banks, " Van Bastelaar said. "This year, we have received proposals for funding from these service providers, as well as the Respite Centre at Saugeen First Nation and will decide on recipients once all the monies are in," she added.

As of February 24, 43% of the goal had been achieved. "We are hoping that teams and individuals will keep up the peer-to-peer fundraising," said Van Bastelaar. "Turnout last year was good, with 191 walkers and 33 teams but so far we have a few less this year."

Forecasts are indicating some light snow and zero degrees, much better than last year, said Van Bastelaar, when the 5km walk was cancelled due to weather.

There are 2km or 5km walks, with the start and finish at Lakeshore Recreation at 1177 Goderich St. Registration is at 4pm, with a 5pm send-off for participants and a light meal served at 6pm.
