Bruce County Public Library (BCPL) is inviting young readers across the region to dive into a celebration of Canadian storytelling as it launches this year’s Forest of Reading program — the country’s largest recreational reading initiative.
The national program, run annually through schools and public libraries, highlights Canadian authors and illustrators while encouraging children and teens to discover the joy of reading.
BCPL hopes this year’s program will not only get more books into the hands of young readers but also strengthen their connection to Canadian stories — both local and national.
For the 2025/26 program, BCPL is offering six award categories that span Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12: Blue Spruce, Silver Birch Express, Silver Birch Fiction, Yellow Cedar, Red Maple, and White Pine.
Each category showcases a curated list of favourite Canadian books tailored to different ages and reading levels; with an emphasis on diverse voices and themes.
Among this year’s nominees is a familiar local name. Bruce County author Elizabeth Davaze has been shortlisted in the Blue Spruce category for The Weedflower, a picture book for ages 4 to 7 that explores themes of wonder, community, and resilience. Library staff say her nomination adds a special sense of pride to this year’s program.
“The Forest of Reading is a great opportunity for our patrons to connect with Canadian stories and discover new authors. We’re proud to support a program that celebrates creativity and the joy of reading,” said Program Coordinator Nancy Kuhl.
Teachers can register their classes through their nearest BCPL branch, while individual readers can participate by visiting any library location. Participants receive ballots featuring the nominees in their age category and BCPL encourages everyone to read at least five of the 10 nominated titles before voting for their favourite by April 24, 2026. Winners will be announced during the Forest of Reading Festival in Toronto next spring.
