Community Foundation Grey Bruce (CFGB) is expanding its role in local housing solutions with the launch of the Grey Bruce Community Development Corporation (CDC), a new not-for-profit initiative aimed at accelerating affordable housing projects across the region.

For nearly 30 years, CFGB has operated on the principles of trust-based philanthropy—prioritizing relationships, collaboration, and long-term community investment. That same approach is now guiding the new CDC, which will focus on helping housing initiatives move into fruition.

“This isn’t about replacing the great work happening in our community,” said CFGB Executive Director Stuart Reid. “It’s about helping housing projects move from idea to reality by providing tools, expertise, and connections.”

Community development corporations operate worldwide in a variety of forms, typically assisting community well-being and local economic growth. The Grey Bruce CDC will begin with a clear priority: bolstering the supply and sustainability of affordable housing.

In a recent media release from CFGB, the CDC will:

Provide mentorship and technical expertise to groups developing community housing

Explore social finance tools, such as community bonds, to encourage new forms of local investment

Lead or support initiatives that create or preserve affordable housing

Bring together governments, developers, and non-profits to collaborate on solutions

The initiative builds on housing-focused work already underway in the region, including the Institute of Southern Georgian Bay’s Housing and Social Finance Learning Circle and CFGB’s 2023 Vital Focus on Housing report. Both highlight the need for community-led solutions supported by strong partnerships.

“We believe housing solutions should be created in partnership with the community,” said CFGB Board Chair Rick Hill. “This CDC is about building community resiliency on many fronts, with housing being an immediate priority for new collaboration.”
