In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town of Saugeen Shores has declared a state of emergency, residents are being urged to stay home for all but essential activities and visitors are being asked to delay their trip.

In a March 24 media release, declaring a state of emergency means that the municipality can access additional resources and expertise throughout this period. The declaration, coupled with the provincial government’s decision to close non-essential businesses, Saugeen Shores will see several changes.

Essential services will focus on the following: policing, fire and emergency response; water supply and waste water treatment; emergency infrastructure repair; winter control; and supporting other essential services as identified by the province.

The Southampton Landfill operations and hours will be modified. As well, the municipality has closed all playground structures, public washrooms, the Skate Park, BMX Park and Off-Leash Dog Park.

“The Town is committed to keeping our community safe and continuing essential service delivery,” said Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “But I want to be clear, the COVID-19 pandemic is a serious situation for everyone in Saugeen Shores. Stay home for all but essential activities, including buying food, medicine, or going to work," he said.

“To anyone planning to visit cottages in Saugeen Shores in the coming days, I am asking you now to postpone those plans. Our healthcare resources will be stretched thin by those people already in our community, so please, stay home. When this situation is over, Saugeen Shores will eagerly welcome you, but now is not the time.”

In a video posted to the Saugeen Shores' Youtube channel, the mayor said that Council Chambers was now acting as the Town's emergency operations centre.
