After three days of play at the Girls Silver Stick Caitlyn Cobean Memorial Tournament in Saugeen Shores, the February 4 division final at the Plex went into triple overtime with the Saugeen Shores Storm Pee Wee C team claiming the title in a 2-1 final against the Lucan Irish. Madison Wheeler was named Player of the Game.

Joining the Pee Wees in Silver Stick action were Saugeen Shores Bantam and Atom Storm C teams who performed well in their respective divisions.

The Silver Stick tournament was the third tournament of the season for the Pee Wees who came in second at tournaments in Stratford and Woodstock with a season record of 28 wins, 7 losses and 4 ties.

The memorial tournament is an annual event and is held in honour of former Saugeen Shores Storm and Silver Sticks athlete Caitlyn Cobean who passed away in 2008 at the age of 15 following a battle with brain cancer. This year’s tournament saw 35 teams and approximately 500 players from Midget, Bantam, Pee Wee, Atom and Novice divisions.

The Saugeen Shores Minor Hockey Associaton (SSMHA) provided a bevy of volunteers with games being played at the Plex in Port Elgin, the Southampton Coliseum, the Paisley Arena and Tiverton Arena.

The Rotary Hall at the Plex was also a busy place with a Pancake Breakfast provided by Caitlyn Cobean’s Community Crusaders (CCCC) as well as a SSMHA fundraiser raising over $3,000 for CCCC.
