Eight teams of accomplished and aspiring professional hockey players will take to the ice at 3 p.m. on April 1 at the Plex in Port Elgin, part of the inaugural season of the 3HL.

Dubbed the Saugeen Shores Sunset Cup, the “March Madness” style 3 on 3 tournament will have players looking to win a share of $15,000 in prize money.

One of eight teams to take to the ice will be the Guelph Brewers. Players on the Brewers roster are local talent Brett and Miles MacLean, Greg Virgo and Saugeen Shores Winterhawks, former NHLer, Theo Peckham. To date the Brewers sit in second place with $12,000 in earnings and a 5-4 record. Despite being near the top of the 3HL standings, Guelph has yet to capture a 3HL event title.

Tickets for the event run $19.99 per person, while children under 3 are free. However, organizers who were in Saugeen Shores March 9 said that ticket promotions and discounts will be available on the 3HL’s website, 3hltour.com.

During a March 9 interview, 3HL CEO Justin Fox said that 3HL is still looking to partner with a local charity and that money raised from the tournament will also go to benefit national charities including March of Dimes Canada and Prostate Cancer Canada.
