It was a weekend of fun - both on and off the ice - during the International Girls Silver Stick - Caitlyn Cobean Memorial Tournament - C Finals, February 3 through 5, with Saugeen Shores Storm Midget C taking home the glory during the final game against the Lucknow Sepoys 2-1. Prior to the weekend tournament the Storm team had only tied the Sepoys, and were never on the winning end in other match-ups.

The Midget C girls were undefeated in the tournament, with goalie Marley Scott only letting in three goals in five games, with assistance from strong defencemen. Savannah Brown was labelled “Player of the Game” in the final for putting the puck in the net, not once, but twice to help her team claim victory.

The weekend tournament saw three teams from Mount Forest - Bantam, Pee Wee, and Atom - all make it to the finals, with the Pee Wee team, clinching the division.

The Novice C Storm team played three games, which included a tie with TCDMHA (Chatsworth District) Royals, a loss against the Walkerton Capitals and a win over the Owen Sound Ice Hawks.

Pee Wee players had a fun time during the tournament playing four games and winning one. Although they did not play games on the Sunday, the players attended and cheered the Midget C girls to victory.

Tournament Director Tammy Nason was happy with how the weekend turned out and that the weather cooperated for the 34 teams who had travelled to Saugeen Shores for the tournament, and to and from arenas’ in Paisley, Tiverton, Port Elgin and Southampton. She was also thankful that there were no injuries or suspensions.

Nason’s daughter is the goalie for the Pee Wee team and found time to check out her daughters games as both the Storm Pee Wee and Novice teams made it to semi-finals games at the Plex, February 4.

Although the young Atom C Storm team did not contribute points to the scoreboard, their enthusiastic deliverance of O’Canada during February 3 opening ceremony showed that they had fun.

Nason said that even though they had 34 goals against them in this year’s tournament, when the same team played as Atoms in the tournament years ago, they had 65 points against them and 0 for.

“A core group of the Midget girls have been together (since Atom), and it shows, it pays off in the end. They may struggle in Atom but it pays off,” said Nason, who thinks they’ll start to see success.
