For the second year in a row, Brampton’s Deruelle team won the Port Elgin Superspiel. Hosted by the Port Elgin Curling Club, the Superpiel is in its 33rd year and was held November 18 to 20.

As the winners, the team took home more than $5,500 from the lucrative tournament that gives out over $18,000 in prizes. The second place Mellor team from Kitchener-Waterloo took home over $2,750.

Superspiel Chair Earl Anderson said that the Port Elgin curling tournament is the longest running Ontario cash spiel still in existence.

There was little standing room during the three-day event. Anderson said that out of the 24 teams involved in the spiel, 18 are active tour event curling teams, so many stayed around for camaraderie and to watch the other competitors who they see often.

During the second day of the tournament, November 19, junior Saugeen Shores curlers were able to show the competitors their skills, and even got their own Superspiel curler added to a team.

“The junior event was a roaring success,” said Anderson. “The juniors loved it, the curlers from the Superspeil teams thought it was great, there was a lot of laughing and kidding. The curlers from the Superspeil teams were busy showing these guys what to do and explaining it.” Anderson went on to say that this is something that will go on again the future.
