The Municipal Heritage Committee unveiled a new plaque commemorating industrial activity that occurred and thrived in Port Elgin because of the then active railroad. The plaque which features historical photos and information is situated near the tracks of the old Port Elgin Railway Station next to the Saugeen Rail Trail and River Street.

Heritage Committee member and outgoing Saugeen Shores Councillor Neil Menage spoke at the unveiling noting that over the years things do change and with change comes stories of what once was. “Over time things change, the [railroad] station is no longer, the railway tracks are no longer here and we have other beautiful new buildings that are taking their place but some of it is still here,” said Menage, making mention of the historical Stevens-Hepner Co. Ltd. factory, formerly Dunblane and Turners, that is situated a block from the plaque.

The historical plaque notes families who began businesses in the growing community of Port Elgin. Businesses such as one of the earliest farm co-operatives in Ontario, a metal-work business that grew to make locomotives for industrial use and tourism, fuel suppliers and a brush and broom factory that garnered international attention for its curling brooms.

“I think we like to tell stories, that’s what heritage is about,” said Menage.

Municipal Heritage Chair, Vice Deputy Mayor Diane Huber, was happy to say that there will be another plaque unveiled on August 18 that will recall the past of Denny’s Dam in Southampton.
