SDSS students created mini activities for the visiting young growers from GC Huston Public School April 17 as part of SDSS’s Young Growers Day.

Hub Staff

Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) students enrolled in the Greenhouse program received help from young and aspiring green thumbs who had travelled to the high school in Port Elgin from GC Huston Public School in Southampton, April 17.

The Young Growers program, supported by Mowbray’s Canadian Tire, has been a community outreach program for the past 12 years, where Greenhouse students from SDSS create mini-lessons and activities for visiting elementary schools.

Two classes from GC Huston had the opportunity to learn how to transplant plants, feed a Venus Flytrap, meet some crickets, and even participate in a scavenger hunt inside the SDSS Greenhouse.

Every school involved with the Young Growers program had a chance to take some greenery back to their school from SDSS by way of mobile carts with LED grow lights made possible through previous Mowbray’s Canadian Tire donations.

Mike and Eleanor Mowbray, Canadian Tire Port Elgin, will be donating $3,000 towards Greenhouse initiatives and have recently donated over 25 vases to the program.
