Secondary students from across Bruce and Grey counties attended a skilled trades event March 23 in Owen Sound with students competing in categories including Culinary, Automotive, Hairstyle, Carpentry, Precision Machining, Small Powered Equipment and Welding.

Over 100 secondary students from across Bruce and Grey counties, including a large contingent from Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB), attended the premier local skilled trades event of the year on Friday, March 23 in Owen Sound. From a BWDSB media release, hosted by the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), the 14th instalment of the Regional Technological Skills Challenge invited students enrolled in trades related programs to compete in eight diverse categories under the watchful eye of local industry judges.

Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) students placed in the top three in two of the total eight categories with Dre Wannamaker placing first in the Culinary division and Jazmyn Munn placing second.

Tyler Jissink placed third in Electrical Installations.

Other schools to finish in top positions included Kincardine District Secondary School, John Diefenbaker Senior School, St. Mary’s High School, Georgian Bay Community School, Bruce Peninsula District School, Sacred Heart High School and Owen Sound District Secondary School with other categories including Automotive, Carpentry, Hairstyling, Precision Machining, Small Powered Equipment, and Welding.

Ten BWDSB students have advanced to compete at the Skills Ontario Qualifying Competitions in Barrie April 7 including SDSS student Jazmyn Munn competing in the Culinary category.
