At close to 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, February 11, the Saugeen Shores Fire Department were called back into action just nine hours after an aggressive Elgin Street fire with a second major house fire on Shantz Street in Port Elgin.

Saugeen Shores Fire Chief Phil Eagleson confirmed the home as a total loss with the fire fully consuming the inside. “The lone occupant was able to exit quickly due in part to a warning provided by her two dogs,” said Eagleson, adding that the formal cause of the fire is yet to be deteremined.

The department was quickly on the scene including several volunteers who had fought the earlier Elgin Street fire. Eagleson was pleased to note that there were some fresh firefighters which he said proved helpful during the minus 13C night.

“Upon arrival this house fire was fully developed and venting out of the windows,” said Eagleson.

Firefighters recovered two dogs from the home and were able to revive one with a resuscitation effort. The dog was sent to the Guelph University Veterinary Hospital. The second dog, unfortunately, did not survive.

Chief Eagleson added that the two people who lived in the home have lost everything.
