The Canadian staple that is maple syrup will be in abundance with its sugary goodness in Port Elgin’s Coulter Parkette March 24, 2018, as the Port Elgin BIA puts its own spin on the event formerly hosted by Saugeen Valley Conservation Foundation.

For 40 years the event took place at Saugeen Bluffs and during a delegation to Saugeen Shores Council Port Elgin BIA President Jeff Carver said that the BIA, the Port Elgin Lions Club as well as avid community participants have already joined together in the planning of the spring event.

With details still being determined, Carver did let slip that the Lions Club will be hosting a pancake breakfast at the newly renovated Coulter Parkette, and that kids-centric activities, horse and carriage rides, and toffy in the snow will all be included, while maintaining former traditions synonymous with the festival.

“To say that we’re taking over the same festival might be a bit of a stretch,” said Carver December 11. “We can’t hope to recreate the feeling and the atmosphere created by having a festival in the woods,” he added.

“What we’re hoping to do is create something on our own, drawing on their expertise and the success that they’ve seen in the past and do something truly unique and exciting in downtown Port Elgin.”

Carver said that the event will be free to the public, craftily adding, “the festival will flow as freely as the maple syrup that’s going to be at it.”
