walk2 560Over the last few weeks, the Me to We group at Northport Elementary School has been spreading awareness about water quality and quantity around the world. From late March to early April, members have collected over $3,000, which will be donated through the WE organization to construct clean water kiosks for a community ($100), clean water for a family for life ($250) or rehabilitation of a community well ($1000).

During the week of April 10 to 13, Northport’s Me to We members held true to their pledges by walking and carrying water every recess to experience what many young children in third world countries do daily.

Every day, women and children around the world spend 200 million hours fetching water, often from sources full of harmful contaminants. In some countries, women and children have to walk over 3.7 miles (the distance between Square Deal Neil’s in Southampton to Port Elgin Cinemas) every day to fetch water; and often girls are unable to attend school because of trekking long distances. How far would you walk for water? Help make water a right not a privilege!
