The Port Elgin harbour members Dinghy Poker Run Fundraiser took place on the afternoon of Sunday, September 6 with all the money raised from entry fees going to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation.

A blow horn sounding five times at 12 noon started off the event, which saw teams sailing in their dingies from their own docks to five different stations around the harbour. At each station, each contestant drew a single card from a deck of large playing cards. The individual with the best poker hand at the end is the winner.

It might sound easy enough but the hard part was reaching the five stations as each dingy team was armed with buckets, water guns and anything else they could think using to soak their opponents in an all out water fight. The only rule seemed to be that they were not allowed to soak the staff and volunteers.

Not only did the contestants have to worry about being soaked by other teams in dinghies but other boats stationed in the harbour took it upon themselves to soak the competitors and people on the sides of the harbour were also armed with buckets.

At the end of the run the results were calculated and following a bit of confusion Katie MacMillan from Kitchener was declared the winner with four of a kind. Katie chose a $25 gift card to The Wismer House from a prize table containing various gifts donated by local business sponsors.

Organizer, Barb Harris thanked the sponsors and volunteers. “It was a fun day, everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun out there and there were no injuries as far as I know,” she said.

Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation Chair, Jonna Ebel and Executive Director Sally Kidson accepted a cheque from the Port Elgin harbour members for $1,065.
