Bruce Power supplier partners have donated $150,000 to Noongwa Wellness, supporting plans for an Indigenous-owned and operated family medicine and wellness facility in Neyaashiinigmiing.
The contribution was made through the Saugeen Ojibway Nation Community Development Fund and advances a three-year, $1-million commitment from Bruce Power and its supplier partners.
Noongwa Wellness is developing a facility designed to bring culturally relevant and accessible primary healthcare and wellness services closer to home.
The project, led by Noongwa Wellness, includes Dr Elisa Levi, a member of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, as its inaugural physician. The organization says the facility will provide integrated, culturally-grounded care in a welcoming environment that recognizes connections among culture, community and healing.
Bruce Power Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice-President James Scongack said that access to quality healthcare should reflect the needs and values of the people it serves.
“We are proud to continue supporting Noongwa Wellness as it creates a model of care that is community-led, culturally relevant and rooted in the vision of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation,” he said.
Noongwa Wellness Chair Robin Jones said the support is helping move the project closer to delivering primary healthcare and wellness services within the community.
“Noongwa Wellness is about much more than a building,” Jones said. “It is about creating a place where people can access primary healthcare and wellness services within community, in an environment that reflects who we are and our connection to the natural world.”
Noongwa Wellness continues to raise funds for the project. More information and donation details are available at www.noongwa.ca.
