scout california FullThe Southampton Residents' Association held their Chantry Family Fun Day in cooperation with the Town of Saugeen Shores, Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority and the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation.

The event took place between 9:15am and 3:00pm in and around the Long Dock Pavilion on Front Street, near Gerry's Fries.

The event was aimed at children aged between 7 and 12 and was based on the environment, safety and pollution so that they could learn and have fun at the same time.

Events included the Yellow Fish Road Program, which was organized by Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority to raise awareness of pollution entering local waterways through storm drains. Teams went out across Southampton painting yellow fish on the pavement as a reminder that anything going into a storm sewer ends up in the lake.

A nature discovery walk and a scavenger hunt where children won prizes and also learned about such things as rocks, minerals and where sand comes from were also part of the morning activities.

Linda Dorin of the Southampton Residents' Association who organized and helped run the scavenger hunt said of the event that they wanted to branch out and do some more community work. "If it's a success, which I would say it is because we had sixty-seven kids here, they'll (SRA) do it yearly."

A free hot dog lunch was served while children and their families were entertained by singer, songwriter Paul Hock before further activities took place down on the lake where the Saugeen Shores Lifesaving Club helped children to ride a paddle board and families were able to go out and paddle a Voyageur canoe.
