A new organization is bringing together various entities in Saugeen Shores. Summer Music Society was incorporated in 2017 and is the umbrella organization that brings Summer Music Camp, the Something Different concert and special events to local Saugeen Shores schools. The creation of this umbrella organization provides more opportunities for artistic and cultural growth in Saugeen Shores.

In a recent media release, the Society is cultivating not only the education and musicians who come to Summer Music but is also exploring future outlets for local talent and opportunities for audiences to experience performance arts in Saugeen Shores. Summer Music Camp is now in its 31st year, Something Different has been playing for four years and a One Day Band Camp for local schools was introduced in 2018.

Anyone can declare their friendship to the Society and in doing so will help to not only keep the existing programs alive but also help spread the word and provide some moral and financial support for the administration and promotion of programs and events. A solid and substantial group of supporters will help to exemplify the community commitment to and of the arts in the region.

For a $10 annual fee, Society ’Friends’ receive exclusive benefits including an invitation and reduced admission to all Summer Music Society events, reserved seating at all Summer Music Society sponsored events, annual news letter, early bird booking Summer Music Camp until the deadline (commencing for the 2019 camp), reduced cost for Summer Music branded items, and recognition in Summer Music Camp Gala program and website.

Organizers of Summer Music 2018 have been busy since last September pulling together programs, hiring faculty, securing venues and holding events to bring the music camp to fruition. The camp originated in 1987 in Southampton and last year over 200 people were involved, including participants, faculty and volunteers. The camp had grown and its venues were full.

Due to challenges such as renovations and unavailability with some of the traditional venues for the 2018 season, Summer Music Camp will utilize Saugeen District Secondary School in Port Elgin as a temporary venue. Summer Music Camp will be held July 23 to July 27 and offers fabulous faculty, programs for all ages and great music. Registration is open but some classes are filling. Visit www.summermusic.com for details.
