The Southampton Arts Centre and the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre have partnered in hosting “A Living Legacy Juried Exhibition.” This exhibit is a demonstration of the living legacy of Bert Henderson’s vision for the arts in Southampton.

From a Bruce County Museum media release, the exhibition will feature a selection of juried art works created by local artists whose artistic journey has been influenced and touched by the Southampton Arts Centre – Art School and Gallery. Juried art work will be exhibited alongside a grouping of works by Southampton Art School Founder, Bert Henderson.

Also included in the exhibition will be works by accomplished artists who worked with or taught alongisde Henderson such as Arthur Shilling (deceased), Roly Fenwick and Erik Jarl (deceased).

“We are committed to offering unique exhibition opportunities that showcase the talent of our many local artists,” said Darlene McMurdie, Director of the Southampton Arts Centre. “For art lovers and art collectors you will not want to miss the inspiring works on display. Our Jury Committee, alongside Jurors Chris Ayers from Wyndham Art Supply in Guelph and Sue Miller from the Bay School of Art in Collingwood, provided participating artists with written critiques and chose winners in a variety of categories – not an easy task given the many works of impassioned artists and their outstanding submissions”.

“We are pleased to once again partner with the Southampton Arts Centre,” said Cathy McGirr, Director of the Museum & Cultural Services. “We are especially excited to be hosting this show of creative works by artists inspired by Bert Henderson’s legacy and the 60 year history of the Southampton Art School.”

The exhibit will run from September 11 to October 28 at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre with an opening reception for Museum and Art School members and guests being held on September 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre.

Included in the reception, at 2:15 p.m., will be the screening of a documentary film about Bert Henderson by Richard Thomas.

"Living Legacy" is the second part of the exhibition. The first part, “Sketches Revealed,” was held at the Southampton Arts Centre in August and featured Henderson's sketches and drawings that spanned decades.
