A Family Day long weekend of outdoor adventure will take place during Snow Fest 2017 at MacGregor Point Provincial Park, February 18, 19 and 20.

The weekend kicks-off with a walk along the Huron Fringe boardwalk, where park naturalists will play guide to families that are looking to learn about birding. Birding for Beginners begins at 10:00 a.m. and Madeline Sanagan, Acting Natural Heritage Education Leader, said it’s a good opportunity for families to learn basic concepts such as how to use binoculars and resources. “We’re going to start with more popular birds that are around, that you’re definitely going to see, so it’s a good opportunity for people who are interested in starting to go birding,” said Sanagan who called the hike an “easy walk”.

Then MacGregor’s Survival Challenge will take place on Sunday, February 19 at 11 a.m., where teams of four will work to complete puzzles and coordination challenges and answer skill testing questions. Teams can sign up in advance by calling 519-389-6231 with a final heat taking place at 1 p.m.

Once darkness falls at 7:30 p.m., there will be a night hike, the Owl Prowl which will feature a special guest from Wild Ontario.

On Family Day there will be an ‘Ask the Naturalist’ session which Sanagan called “an opportunity for folks to ask questions in an informal setting.” Guests can learn about winter activities and behaviours with local dog-sledder Lisa De Gennaro bringing her sled dogs back to the MacGregor trail from noon to 2 p.m. Families will have an opportunity to ask Lisa questions about dog-sledding, take photos and watch a demonstration.

All activities for the Snow Fest weekend of activities will begin at the Park’ Visitor Centre.

So far, with mild temperatures the park’s Skating Loop has had a rough season but Sanagan said her fingers will be crossed for it to be open to skaters for Family Day weekend. When open, the loop runs from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
