Plans are underway for the community’s first Glow Rider Family Bike Night. On Saturday, October 7 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. kids and families are invited to decorate their bikes with lights and glow sticks and come to Nodwell Park in Port Elgin to experience the excitement of riding their colourfully decorated bikes at dusk.

From a Town of Saugeen Shores media release, this free family event is hosted by the Town and aims to encourage families to get outdoors, be active and have fun. Families can register in advance at saugeenshores.ca/register or the municipal office, or on the day of the event.

The event kicks off at 4:30 p.m. with music, a barbecue, bike safety and helmet fit demonstrations, a mini bike rodeo and a bike decorating station. The bike ride will begin at 6 p.m. on the Nodwell Park track where participants will be invited to ride as many loops of the track as they like. Prizes will be awarded in the best decorated bike category for kids, families and adults.

“We thought this would be a great event to get kids and families onto their bikes and outdoors this fall,” said Lisa Billing, Recreation Supervisor for the Town of Saugeen Shores. “By adding the element of ‘glow’ to the event we hope to create a new and unique biking experience for the public to enjoy while growing the culture of cycling in Saugeen Shores.”

The inaugural Glow Rider Family Bike Night is sponsored by 98 the Beach and generously supported by Boston Pizza Saugeen Shores, Grey Bruce Health Unit and Martin’s Bicycle Shop. Businesses or organizations that would like to be involved are invited to contact Heather 519-832-2008 extension 111 or heather.lorenz@saugeenshores.ca.

All participants are required to have a helmet and a front light and rear flasher on their bikes. A rain date of Friday, October 13 is planned in the event of inclement weather. More information is available at saugeenshores.ca/glowride.
